"Oil-friendly, detergent-friendly"
—Effortless Magewappa

Do you think Magewappa is "hard to clean"?

Can't put oily foods in it, can't use detergent...
But you don't have to worry about that anymore.

Ryoubi An's Magewappa is coated with urethane that complies with the Food Sanitation Act. Oily foods are OK. Detergent is OK.
To clean it, simply wash it lightly with a sponge and let it dry.

This coating is so safe that it's used for baby furniture and medical equipment.
The completely dried and hardened coating film is harmless to the human body and safe for food.

And most importantly, the scent and warmth of the wood remain.
There's no need to worry that "the coating might spoil the texture."

Even with advanced ease of use, the scent and warmth of the cedar remain.

Ryoubi An's Magewappa combines "ease of use," "beauty," and "safety."

The wood for crafts, chosen after 100 years

Odate City, Akita Prefecture, is one of Japan's three most beautiful forests.
Akita cedar, grown in heavy snow, has fine growth rings due to its slow growth, and its grain is straight and beautiful.

Among these, Ryoubi An only uses cedar that is about 100 years old. In fact, young trees have a coarse grain and tend to warp, making them unsuitable for crafts. Only wood that has aged for a long time will resist warping and maintain its shape for a long time, resulting in beautiful vessels.

Furthermore, since 2013, the logging of natural Akita cedar has been prohibited, and only limited resources that have been systematically harvested for conservation are currently available. From these rare logs, we luxuriously use "quartersawn wood," which accounts for only 10-20% of the yield.

For the seams, durable cherry bark is used instead of metal. The wood naturally breathes with each other, and over time, the whole harmonizes and develops a deeper flavor.

A single piece is born when 100-year-old cedar and the artisan's handiwork come together. That is Ryobian's Magewappa.

A single piece is born when 100-year-old cedar and the artisan's handiwork come together. That is Ryobian's Magewappa.

Each piece is handmade, creating a unique charm.

Ryobian's magewappa are crafted by artisans through numerous processes.

Steaming and bending thin cedar boards, fastening them with cherry bark, and carving and fitting the bottom board—
This is only a small part of the process.

From selecting the boards to the finishing touches, a single vessel is completed through dozens of steps.
That is why, even with the same shape, the wood grain and texture differ slightly, creating a unique charm that is one of a kind.

Bending the Sides of the Bento Box

Thinly shaved cedar boards are steamed and carefully bent along a mold. Some boards may break in the process, but only those that maintain their beautiful shape until the end proceed to the next step. In other words, only "selected materials" remain.

Attaching the Bottom Board

A single board is gradually shaved and repeatedly adjusted until it fits perfectly with the sides. This process, where even slight misalignment is unacceptable, tests the artisan's intuition and concentration. This meticulous work contributes to the durability that prevents wobbling even after long use.

Fastening with Cherry Bark

Holes are drilled in the sides, and strong cherry bark is threaded through to secure them. Because it is assembled using only natural materials without metal, it adapts to the expansion and contraction of the wood, and over time, the entire piece harmonizes. This is an unseen finish that supports both strength and beauty.

"When the box arrived and I opened it, a wonderful woody scent filled the air, and my whole family cheered!"

"The wood grain is incredibly smooth, and you can truly feel the careful craftsmanship just by holding it."

"The surface and corners are smooth to the touch. The wood grain is straight, and you can tell it's truly a high-quality product."

Rice looks delicious, making it fun to prepare, and making daily lunch boxes something to look forward to.
These small changes enrich your life.
Here are some comments from people who have actually used Ryobi-an's Magewappa.

"My workplace changed, so I started bringing lunch, and I bought this to boost my motivation. I have several inexpensive Magewappa, but I decided to splurge a bit and buy this one because I wanted something good to use for a long time. The wood surface is smooth, and the sound of opening and closing the lid is pleasant. It's slim and easy to hold, and I want to cherish it and use it for a long time. The bonus furoshiki was also lovely."

"I've always been interested in Magewappa lunch boxes, and this time I bought one for my daughter for the first time. It's lighter than I expected and has a smooth texture. It's only been a short time since we started using it, but she says the rice is delicious. I'm not good at packing neatly, but the beauty of the Magewappa makes it look appetizing. I'm very happy with it. Thank you."

-- Merry RIN / Female / 50s

"I've always been interested in Magewappa lunch boxes, but I was hesitant because I thought they might be difficult to care for, and I wasn't sure if painted ones would be good. This lunch box satisfied both of those concerns. It's not difficult to care for and easy to use without worry, and the scent of cedar makes the food taste delicious. It also looks appetizing. And the smooth texture is pleasant to the touch, making it a beautiful lunch box that I admire. I want to cherish it and use it for a long time."

"It was just as I imagined. I finally got the Magewappa bento box I'd always dreamed of. When I used it right away, the cedar felt as good as I expected, and the aroma of the rice I packed was wonderful and delicious. The side dishes in the bento also looked appetizing, which made me happy. Making bento every day has become fun."

-- Mamitan 5521 / Female / 50s

"It's worth the price. Even simple side dishes look delicious! I was worried about not being able to microwave it or put it in the dishwasher, but it's more than worth it. I thought I'd regret buying something cheap, so I chose this one. The wrapping cloth is also lovely. It's nice that it comes with one, as other shops don't include it."

-- aoharuka / Female / 40s

"Godly Magewappa! Beautiful form, unbelievably lightweight! Is it divine that it's urethane coated so it's okay to put oily foods in it?! It's perfect for those who 'admire Magewappa but don't think they can handle it'."

Your choice protects the forests of the future and tradition.

Odate Magewappa is a traditional Japanese craft that has been passed down for over a thousand years since the Heian period.

Behind it lies Akita cedar, which takes 100 years to grow, and the handiwork of artisans.

However, Akita cedar is becoming scarcer every year, and it takes a long time and great effort to protect the forests and pass them on to the next generation.

That is why choosing a Ryobi-an Magewappa has more meaning than just buying a lunch box.

You might think, "Isn't that a bit of an exaggeration?"
But truly, your choice supports the forests and is a step towards connecting tradition to the future.

While enriching your daily meals, you protect the forests and preserve tradition for the future.
Please take that small step yourself.

Impressing the world with Japanese craftsmanship

from Yesterday Management Office

Japanese craftsmanship is said to be the best in the world, and Japanese people are diligent and serious.
From this, Japanese culture with over 2000 years of history was born.

The meticulousness and quality of unique Japanese techniques, artisans, and crafts are supported by the Japanese people's carefulness and seriousness.

However, Japanese traditions are slowly being lost.

This can be attributed to the Westernization of food and housing, and the distribution of inexpensive overseas products.
Of course, we do not intend to deny these.

However, we believe these are simply due to "few opportunities to recognize the greatness of Japanese culture."

Tradition and culture cease to exist if they are lost.
We do not want to dilute "Japan," which our ancestors protected and passed down at the cost of their lives, in our generation.
This is why we are active.

We personally visit workshops and artisans for interviews.
We believe that not only "products and goods" but also the passion behind them and the feelings towards customers are what constitute Japanese tradition and culture, and we strive to convey this to everyone.

We would be grateful if you could support us in making Japanese tradition and culture shine again and restoring pride in being Japanese.
