Nagasawa Tile Shop
Half a century of roof tile installation in Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
Nagasawa Kawara Shoten has been performing roofing work that protects homes from the elements and creates a sense of security for residents. Their work spans a wide range of projects, from residential homes to shrines and temples. They also offer a full range of services for maintaining roof tiles over the long term, such as plaster repair and drone-based roof health inspections.
Amidst this, they recognized the declining number of tiled roofs in recent years and, as part of their community contribution, participate in lectures and vocational experience "career education" programs for students, and hold lectures at local facilities and workshops at their store.
In addition, Rena, the eldest daughter, who grew up witnessing her father's passion for tiles, became an "onishi" (gargoyle craftsman). "Oni-Rei," Shizuoka Prefecture's only female onishi, manufactures and sells tile accessories that leverage the properties of tiles.
These tile accessories are made using Shimizu clay and fired in their own kilns. They are also working on a revival project for "Shimizu Kawara," which was once a major industry proudly representing Japan and flourished since the construction of Sunpu Castle.
We are actively working to create connections between roof tiles and their culture.
